OSHA Subpart S, 1910 and NFPA outline the requirements for “Qualified Persons”. OSHA states that only a “Qualified Person” is permitted to work on or near exposed energized parts and that a “Qualified Person” is “one who has received training in and has demonstrated skills and knowledge in the construction and operation of electric equipment and installations and the hazards involved.”
Establishing “Qualified Person” status is mandatory for all individuals exposed to the hazards of electrical energy who are employed at US company locations including wholly-owned facilities as well as affiliate and leased facilities where the company has responsibility for facility operations through an operating (or similar) agreement.
The ATMT Electrical Safety Certification TM certification from the nation’s leader in electrical safety training will provide you with the documentation you need to positively demonstrate your knowledge about core electrical safety practices in the workplace.
The exam is a timed test, taken under the live supervision of a proctor, which ensures the validity and consistency of the testing process and gives credibility to the final score.
The exam is made up of 50 multiple choice questions taken from a larger bank of questions, and the order of questioning may vary from test to test to ensure validity. A score of 70% is required to pass the exam and receive AT (American Trainco) certification. Most people who study and have received prior training will score in the 70% to 85% range, which is considered “good” for this test. There will be a number of people who fail however, giving the exam even more credibility for those who pass it.
This certification may be used by the employer as part of a qualified electrical worker program, for assessing the needs of workers, and can be used by the individual to demonstrate his knowledge to an employer.
| Initial Review and Q&A (Optional): | 8:30am – 11:30am |
| Lunch Break and Self Study (Optional): | 11:30am – 1:30pm |
| Final Review and Q&A (Optional): | 1:30pm – 2:30pm |
| Testing Starts: | 2:30pm |
| Testing Ends: | 3:30pm |
Although an optional review of electrical safety is provided prior to taking the exam, the review alone is not intended to prepare individuals to pass the certification exam. Individuals should know the material in their study guide prior to coming in to take the test and should not expect to pass it without having first completed a formal electrical safety training program. Some experienced individuals may be able to pass the exam without prior training; however, it is not uncommon for “experienced” individuals to fail.
Those seeking certification should come prepared and ready to take the exam! Refunds are not allowed for people who start the test but then discover they aren’t ready.
If you have not yet received formal electrical safety training Go to the Electrical Safety Training Schedule now.
This certification is important for anyone who works on or around any electrically energized equipment at industrial plants, utilities or commercial and private building facilities. From machine operators and janitorial personnel, to maintenance workers and experienced electricians - anyone who comes in contact with or who works around electrical equipment must receive Electrical Safety training to be in compliance with the requirements of OSHA standard CFR 1910.331-.335. ATMT Electrical Safety CertificationTM proves that these workers have passed a test proctored by the leader in electrical safety training and demonstrates their knowledge on the subject.
Students will be mailed a study guide prior to the exam date, so register early to make sure you have time to study!
Some of the areas of questioning include:
No. Certification in electrical safety is not a legal requirement. Like “CEU’s” (Continuing Education Credits), certification in this area can mean different things to different people, businesses or other entities. Since there is no legal requirement for this certification and electrical safety is governed by OSHA, it is up to the employer to determine its value for their workplace and employees, and may be adopted by the employer as part of a qualified electrical worker program.
DISCLAIMER & NOTICE FOR ELECTRICAL SAFETY CERTIFICATION
OSHA requires that only a “Qualified Person” may work on or around exposed energized equipment and defines that a “Qualified Person” as is “one who has received training in and has demonstrated skills and knowledge in the construction and operation of electric equipment and installations and the hazards involved.”
While OSHA defines what a “Qualified Person”, they do not define specifically “how” to determine if a worker is a “Qualified Person” or what specific testing or observations are required and leaves this decision to each employer. There are no legal requirements on determining “Qualified Person” status and therefore, it’s up to each employer to determine what their acceptable standards and values are for determining “Qualified Person” status.
Employers may choose to use this Electrical Safety Certification Program as their adopted program and standards for meeting the "demonstration of knowledge" section of OSHA “Qualified Person” requirements, however, Martin Technical nor American Trainco makes no claims, guarantees or warranties on the program fulfilling any OSHA standards or regulations. It is up to each employer / customer to determine if this program meets their requirements for the "demonstration of knowledge" section of a “Qualified Person” status.
Successfully passing the examination does not make a person qualified to work on any particular piece of equipment or perform any particular task on any electrical equipment. This electrical worker certification is only designed to demonstrate knowledge of core and foundational electrical safety concepts. For information or consultation on Qualified Persons for Electrical Safety, please contact us or click her for information on a complete Qualified Electrical Worker Certification Program.
Individuals successfully passing the certification exam will receive an 8-1/2 x 11 certificate suitable for framing along with a laminated certification card. Copies of certifications should be kept on file with the employer.
All student scores are permanently stored in accordance with ACE (American Council on Education) guidelines. Transcripts and replacement cards & certificates may be obtained by calling American Trainco customer service.
